Edmund and Charlotte Boardman in 1906!

It is time now to return to the Boardman side of the family.  When I get the chance I will dig further into the Brown side but that might be awhile. I am trying to catch up.  There is a lot to do regarding Emma (Ward) Brown my great-grandmother.  I do not know much about her.

Edmund and Charlotte Boardman/Bordman are still living in Winnipeg in the 1906 Canadian Census their name is spelled “Bordman.”  I have seen this spelling before.

1906 Edmond Bordman Family

It is interesting that Robert is listed here.  He is also listed living with the Richard Brown family in Winnipeg with his wife Ethel in 1906.  I described this in the post dated August 5, 2011 “Richard Brown After Emma!” These two individuals are my grandparents.  Here he is “single?”  William the younger brother is missing.  He would be about 21 years old.

I do not know who Vellon H. Bordman is?  This is on the summary sheet that Ancestry has created and they interpret the name in this manner.  I believe it should be “John H.” the younger brother.  The age of 20 would match.  The first letter looks like a “J.”

Revisiting City Directories: Winnipeg

We return to the Winnipeg City Directories to see what is happening with the Boardman and Brown families after the 1891 Canadian Census.

We find the Richard Brown family to be as follows:

The Brown Family

1893 Brown, Richard, carpenter 175 Magnus Ave

1894-1899 Brown Richard CPR, 175 Magnus Ave

Brown, Chas W. clerk, 175 Magnus Ave [19 years old in 1894]

The Boardman’s are listed as follows:

1892 Boardman, Edmond, Coppersmith corner of Henry & Lulu

1892:  Boardman, Peter, Carpenter, 765 8th Ave N.  [It is not known who this person is]

1893-1896 Boardman, Edmond, Coppersmith, 573 Logan Ave.

1897 Boardman, Edmond, Coppersmith 573 Logan Ave.

Boardman, Robert, apprentice, 573 Logan Ave. [16 years old]

Boardman, Ed. James, student, 573 Logan Ave. [19 years old]

1899-1909 Boardman, Edmond, Coppersmith CPR, 573 Logan Ave.

Henderson City Directory 1899

We see that one of the children of Richard Brown, Charles, has struck out on his own.  We also see that the children of Edmund Boardman: Robert and Ed. James, are also beginning their work careers.  Robert is my grandfather.

The siblings of Edmond Boardman are not known.  More research needs to be done on the Boardman family.  It is possible that the man named Peter is a relative and it would require some further digging to confirm or disprove that possibility.

Edmund Boardman Coppersmith!

My mother left a handwritten note among her papers that stated that Edmund was born in Lancashire, England.  At this point I have briefly studied the Lancashire area for a possible connection to Boardman’s in that part of England.  My focus has been on finding Edmund in New Brunswick and connecting him to the many Boardman families in that province.

I first found Edmund and Charlotte Boardman in the 1881 Canadian Census for Prince Edward Island.

1881 Canadian Census PEI

This census shows that they are at the bottom of the page.  It starts 75/78 Boardman, E., male, age 30, born in England, religion Church of England, of English decent, occupation Coppersmith.  Next is Boardman, Charlotte, female, age 25, born in NS (Nova Scotia), religion is Presbyterian, of Scottish decent, no occupation listed.  Boardman, Edmund J., male age 3 born in NB, religion Church of Eng., of English decent.  Very carefully listed on the following page we find a Boardman, Zelia A., female, white, age 1, born P.E.I., religion Church of England, English descent.

Apparently moving back and forth from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island was not to difficult because of the ferries.

Edmund is 30 in this census so that means he was born about 1851? Charlotte is 25 in this census places her birth about 1856.  Charlotte is listed as being born in Nova Scotia which is interesting.   This makes them slightly younger than the information I have about their birth dates from death and other documentation.

The next Canadian census was for 1891 and in that census I find them living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  There is no Zelia listed. My Aunt Aileen, their granddaughter, stated that there was a little girl.  She didn’t say much more.

1891 Canadian Census - Manitoba

In this census we have first W1/3/21 Boardman, Edmond, male, age 41, married, born England, parents born in England, occupation copper smith.  Next is Boardman, Charlotte, female, age 36, married, W – wife, born N.B., father born in Scotland, mother born in England, no occupation.  Boardman, Edmond, male, age 13, son, born NB, father born in England, mother born in NB. Boardman, Robert, male, age 10, son, born in NB, father born England, mother born NB.  Boardman, William, male, age 7, son, born in Man, father born in England, mother born in NB. Last is John, male, give years old, son, born in Manitoba, father born in England, mother born in N.B.  All are listed as Church of England.

We now have the complete Boardman family of Edmund and Charlotte Boardman.  In this census we have Charlotte now being born in NB, not NS.

The drive to build the railroad across the Canadian landscape sent many to Winnipeg in the 1880’s and 1890’s.  Being a coppersmith my great-grandfather had skills that were needed.

My Aunt Aileen gave me a silver bowl for a present one time and told me to turn it over and there etched on the bottom was the name “Boardman DA17.”  She giggled.  I still have that bowl even though it is a little tarnished.  As to whether we are a member of that Boardman side of the family I do not know at this time.  I am aware that there are many Boardman’s in the New England area.

Robert and Ethel’s Family

My grandparents Robert and Ethel Boardman had 3 children.

The Boardman Siblings circa 1941

The children were:

1. Hazel Aileen Boardman born 23 May 1907 born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  My Aunt is under the name Hazel Eileen Boardman at the Manitoba Vital Records site.  I have always known her as Aileen.  She giggled when she told me her first name was Hazel.  She is the one on the left in the photo.

The Province of Manitoba has a website where you can search their online Vital Statistics index.  http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/index.html  The cut off for births is 100 years, marriages are 80 years and deaths are 70 years.  This means that I am at 103 years for Aileen’s birth so I can find it in the index.  I have waited awhile for this one.

2.  Marjorie Faye Boardman was born 22 September 1911 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  If you were to search for my mother’s birth record in Vancouver you would find her name written Marjory Josephine Boardman. The requirement for her to change it was to prove that she had used this first name since the age of 12. I think she gave it a try but I don’t think she was ever able to obtain the necessary record from her grade school.   Photo:  In the middle.

3.  Robert Brown Boardman who I always knew as Uncle Boardie was born 26 October, 1916 in Vancouver, British Columbia.  I didn’t learn of his middle name till much later.   I have this information for my uncle based on funeral records that I obtained.  Photo:  On the right.

British Columbia  also has a Vital Event Index website at: http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm  The website gives the dates for the different vital events for birth, death and marriage.

It is always a good idea to study the family structure.  I wonder because of the gaps between the children if there were other babies I don’t know about.  There is 3 years between Aileen and Marjorie and 5 years between Marjorie and Uncle Boardie. I have studied the indexes and there are lots of Boardmans in Vancouver and Winnipeg but I don’t see many babies in the time frame that I need.  There was also a 2 year gap between the 1905 marriage of my grandparents and the date of the birth of Aileen.  Aileen never mentioned it nor did my mother so I will assume that this is the family of Robert and Ethel.
