Heading to Scotland…

Yes, I am going to Scotland, and I will be touring the country for several weeks. I will try to share some of the events as they happen but it will be a busy trip. I am not as young and eager as I used to be and I want to take time and savor it all and it also depends on the WiFi situation?

Scotland simplified

I will be visiting several archives, societies and repositories in my travels. I will be looking into the surname of MacDonald/MacDonell, and Barclay.  I will be seeking information about the surnames of  McMurray, and Jackson that have been discussed on this blog. I know more about the MacD’s and Barclay’s and little about the McMurray’s and Jacksons and their origins.

I know that James McMurray was born in Scotland in 1823 but it is not clear where. On the a census the location of Beulowman is written and a cousin thinks it is Ben Lomond but I have not determined a place for that other than the mountain in Scotland.  It is possible that Mary Jackson McMurray’s father John Jackson was born in Scotland but it is not clear if that is true. I probably should dig deeper into Lancashire, England research.  I will just poke around and see what comes up?  I do plan to visit England and Ireland at some point but wanted to get Scotland done first.

As I visit these archives I will ask lots of questions so I should be very educated in Scottish research by the time I get home. I will also leave behind my family history and maybe it will have some effect?

I will visit lots of castles that have to do with MacDonald/MacDonell history as well as areas and places and also just Scottish history. There will be battlefields to see and the Scottish Highlands to explore including the Isle of Skye and the area west of Fort Augustus.  Click the map and it will open.

The Highlands of Scotland

I will share this trip on two of my blogs, The Man Who Lived Airplanes http://macdonellfamily.wordpress.com and The Barclays of Pine River http://barclayspineriver.wordpress.com.  Maybe a little on this blog but I am not expecting to find much.

It will be EPIC! Bonnie

The Origins of the McMurrays and Jacksons…

Last October 2013, I took a trip to Salt Lake City and attended the British Institute taking classes on English records research.  I also spent time in the Family History Library trying to find out more about the origins of my mother’s family.

I presented my research in England for the  Boardman’s in a previous post.  I found that they really did come from Lancashire, England.  I still have to do more confirming of the possible children I listed in my post but I find it very intriguing that the McMurray’s and Jacksons were also in Lancashire and came over to Canada about the same time?

Here is what I have found so far regarding the McMurray and Jackson connection.  I was inspired by cousins who have gone before me.  James and Mary are my 2nd great grandparents through their daughter my great-grandmother Charlotte Ann McMurray Boardman.

1.  The marriage of James to Mary Jackson took place on 25 January 1847 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

2.  The birth of James, their son, 8 March 1849, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northampton Co., England. He was christened on 1 April, 1849 at All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northampton Co., England.

41, 3 [Walkenson] Ann Jackson, age 67, Head, Widow, 67, occupation _____, born Lancashire, William Jackson, son, age 24, occupation ___________, born Cumberland, Longtown, Richard Jackson, son, age 21, occupation _________, born Cumberland, Longtown, Jame McMurray, son-in-law, age 25 stonemason, born Scotland, Mary McMurray, daughter, age 29, occupation _____________, born Cumberland, Longtown, James McMurray, grandson, age 2, Northampton Newcastle.

There is more to do on this family but I am not very hopeful for further research in England.
