When I was in Lapeer County last Fall of 2014, I found a great newspaper article that  I thought was very interesting.

Esther Brown article in the local newspaper

Esther Brown article in the local newspaper

Mrs. Esther Brown, the widow lady about 81 years of age, has a comfortable little property left her by her husband, the late George Brown, who died last Fall. Some of her friends thought the estate might be better managed if a guardian was appointed. Accordingly the matter came up in the probate court at Lapeer, last Friday, a large number of our town people being summoned as witnesses. Among those who went out on that day were C.E. Bruce, John E. Howe, Mr. and Mrs. John Henn, Will McIntosh, Jos. Lewis, Dr. Weed, Jas. Cooper and wife, Thos. Clement and wife, Jas. Riley and wife, Mrs. S.S. Bates, Jos. Kohler, Robt. Turnbull, Harvey Down and Sp. P. Gates. It was evident to Judge Hough, however, that Mrs. Brown was neither incompetent nor a spendthrift and therefore even though guardian might be to her advantage, he had no legal authority to make the appointment.

However, circumstances changed and on September 4, 1893 she was declared incompetent by the court due to extreme age and guardians were appointed,: Wm and Isabella McIntosh.

On Sept. 24, 1893 (Liber 20 pg. 344. Sept. 2, 1893) Isabella McIntosh asked that Wm McIntosh be appointed Esther’s guardian.

Esther died a year later on 13 August, 1895.

George and Esther King Brown’s children: Esther May Brown

Esther May Brown

Esther May Brown

Esther M. Brown was born about 1848 in Hastings Co., Ontario. She died 5 June, 1886 Michigan. According to online family trees she died 5 June, 1886 in Elmer, Sanilac, Michigan.

Esther (Ester) appears in the 1861 Canadian Census with, her father and mother. George and Esther Brown and other siblings.  She is listed as being 13 years old born in Upper Canada. This means she was born about 1848.

Esther married to James Basna in Lapeer Co. (Lapper), Michigan, per the Michigan Marriages 1822-1995 at FamilySearch (GS#974258, pg. 217).  Two marriage dates are given 1) 4 July, 1867  and 2) 1 January 1867. James may have been born in 1844 in Lapeer Co., and  died about 1875 in Michigan. There is a James listed with a Peter and Mary Basna in Lapeer County in the 1860 census at the age of 6 years old.  One of his brothers was named Horace and Esther and James named one of their sons Horace.

There is not much information about James Basna but a Civil War Pension Index has a James Basna in the 8 Co., 2 Battln on 17 April 1866 another index has Co. G, Reg 7 Michigan Infantry, Private, Union Army.  (#M545 roll 3).  There are several listings for a James Basna so it would mean narrowing down to the correct individual. A look at his Civil War pension might be a good idea. If the Peter Basna in Lapeer is his father that might help with military records. So far I have not found James death information.

I have tried the 1860 and 1870 U.S. Census but I cannot find him at this time.  He is not listed with the Peter Basna family in 1860 but the other children are there.

James and Esther had the following children.

  1. Helena Basna born 14 January. 1869 in Michigan and died 15 February 1898 in Burnside, LaPeer Co., Michigan. Her married name was Brown. She is buried in the Fox Farm Cemetery in Burnside under the name Lena Brown.  Find A Grave has a memorial for her with a death certificate posted which is very difficult to read.  The links say that she was the daughter of George and Esther Brown but this is not true, she was their granddaughter. See below for a marriage for this person.
  2. Horace Basna was born 21 September, 1867 in Burnside, Lapeer Co.,  Michigan and it looks like he married a Florence Short on 20 June, 1922 in Butte, Silver Bow, Montana, his first marriage. He was 50 years old and she was 43. His parents were listed as James Basna and Esther Brown.  Florence was born about 1879 in Aurora, Illinois, to James Wilson and ____Smith.  Florence was a widow.

There is a marriage of a Lena Basna to a Benjamin M. Brown on 4 April 1894 in Lapeer, Lapeer Co., Michigan.  UPDATE 7/22/2016 – A descendant of Lena and Ben has contacted me. She has additional information on this whole family so leave a message and I will be happy to connect you to her.

Lena Basna born about 1869 in Michigan, marriage date of 4 April 1894 in Lapeer Co., Michigan, Burnside, father James Basna, mother Esther M. Brown,

spouse Benjamin M. Brown, age 25, born Canada, living in North Branch, father Peter Brown, mother Elizabeth Sammons.

Esther remarried on 6 July, 1875 in Burnside, Lapeer Co., Michigan to a Mark Robson.  Mark was born in Canada in 1853 and died 19, July, 1912. He is buried in the Winterfield Twp. Cemetery in Clare County, Michigan, per Find A Grave where you will find a picture of his tombstone.

Death of Mark Robson

Mr. Mark Robson was born in Avon, Canada, September 11, 1853, and died at his home in Winterfield, Friday, July 19, 1912.  He moved to Sanilac County, Michigan and settled on a farm, where he was later married to Esther Basney, and this was their home for twenty-one years. They then moved to Arenac County, where he resided for twelve years. In 1894 he was married to Rosetta Cole and to this union were born five children, two of whom are living, aged 7 and 10. He leaves a wife, seven children, five of whom were by his former marriage, and one brother to mourn his departure.  The funeral was held at his late residence Sunday afternoon, Rev. C. A. Brown, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Winterfield cemetery. Those who attended the funeral from a distance were Mrs. Chas. Hubble and family, Mrs. Robert Bennett, for Clare, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jury of Boon.  Source of newspaper unknown.

Mark and Esther’s Children:

  1. Lila Robson was born 16 March, 1876 in Michigan and married on 24 August, 1895 in Burnside to a Arthur M. Stiles. She died 20 January 1924.
  2. Albert Robson born about 1875 in Michigan.
  3. William Robson born about 1880 in Michigan.
  4. Frank Robson born about 1882 in Michigan.
  5. George Robson born 28 January 1884 in Michigan and died 21 September 1953. He married in Brown City, Michigan to Elva Mae Gould.

It is has been very difficult to get information on James Basna, Esther, Lena and Mark.  The online family trees are very confusing so I advise caution.  The  records are not appearing as I would like and the search engines don’t like the last name of Basna.  It would take a great deal of work to figure out this family and what happened searching census again, land records, estate, obituaries, cemetery records and more.  Please double check all of the above information and keep a skeptical eye on it.  I am not totally satisfied with the results.

George and Esther King Brown’s Children: Elizabeth Brown

Elizabeth Brown was born 22 February, 1841 in Hastings Co., Ontario to George and Esther King Brown in Hastings County, Ontario.

She married first to a James Duncan born about 1839 in Upper Canada.  They had at least one child: Matilda A. Duncan born about 1860.  Matilda later married to a James Oak who was born about 1861.

Elizabeth remarried about 1865 to Thomas Little Clement son of Charles and Martha Little Clement and brother to William Charles Clement (1838-1911) who would marry a sister of Elizabeth’s.  Thomas was born December 1842 in Ontario.

Thomas and Eliza appear in the 1871 Canadian Census in Petrolia.

According to some information on a future census it looks like the family left Canada and headed for Michigan about 1885.

Thomas and Eliza had the following children:

  1. Charles Clement born about 1866 in Ontario, died 1947. He is buried in the Richland Cemetery and there is an Adeline McNary connected to him as his wife on Find A Grave. He is said to have served in the 20th U.S. Infantry Co. H.

Charles married Addia on 11 June, 1891 in Michigan:

2.  Martha Clement was born about 1869 in Ontario and may have married a Mr. Wilson. The grandson listed above in the 1894 and 1900 census as Jay C. Wilson or Clement J. Wilson is probably her child.  This might imply that Martha had died before 1894.

3.  Elizabeth Clement was born about 1871 in Ontario. She might have been known as Eliza.

4.  Jane Clement was born about 1874 in Ontario. She died 15 November, 1930 in McBain, Missaukee, Michigan. She was married to a Mr. McLaughlin.  She was born about 1874 in Canada and was 56 years old at death.  She was a housewife. Father was Thomas Clement and mother was Eliza Brown. FHL#96403, Michigan Deaths and Burials 1867-1995.

There is a possible marriage to a Thos. McLaughlin born about 1854 in Canada to a Lila Clement age 25 born in Canada.  The marriage took place on 30, September, 1896 in Saginaw, Michigan.  He was 42 years old and living in Brown City.  His father was Wm. and his mother was Mary J. McDonald.  Lila’s father was Thos and her mother was Jane Brown. Record #6138, film 58, 1896-Muskegon-1897,  Michigan Marriage Records, 1867-1952.

5.  George Clement born about 1876 in Ontario. He is living with his father in the 1894 Michigan State Census, see above.

After much searching in online sources for both Michigan and Ontario, I have decided that I have done the best I can for this family of Eliza’s.  There is definitely more to do on this family and it will require a lot of digging.  Several of them are found in Missaukee County, Michigan, so that might be a location for research.  I am not up on Michigan research although I have done some regarding my Goss family but that was in the lower counties of the state and of course I did go to Lapeer and do research there concentrating on George and Esther while I was there.  I am finding it very difficult to trace a family from Canada to the U.S. and keep things straight, so again, please double-check the above.

There is a Family Tree at Ancestry that is public about the Charles Clement and Martha Little family by the title Shepherd Family Tree, it is not bad and has some sources.  It suggests that Charles was born in Devon Co., England.  This tree might be helpful to Clement researchers.

I have tried to find Francois or Frank Lamott/Lamotte in the Canadian Census and the U.S. Federal Census, after the death of his wife Margaret, but I have not been successful.

However, there is a marriage of a Francis Lamotte male born about 1838 in Ambertsburgh, Ontario. He married on 16 February, 1880 in Port Huron, St. Clair, Michigan age 42 residence Petrolia, Ontario. The spouse is Emma Reynolds age 36 born in Brighton, Ontario. residing in Petrolia, #242, 20 1880 Marquette – 1881 Berrien.  Could this be him?

Francois or Frank and Margaret may have had eleven children.  I have attempted to find information about as many of the children as possible but it has not been easy. so please use the following with care.  Because there is only one census of 1871 showing the Francois Lamotte Family it is making it hard to determine the actual names and number of children born to the couple after 1871.

In 1901 there is a Horace T. Lamotte age 25 born 25 April 1875 in Ontario, French, Methodist occupation sand buffer living in Middlesex in London. His wife is Annie and a child names Lenord E.  This is a strong possibility that it is Horace because George Lamotte is living in Strathroy at the same time.

11. Emma Lamott b. about 1879 in Ontario.

This family of Francois Lamotte/LaMotte/Lamothe has been very difficult to find and follow.  I was hoping to find the father Francois/Frank in the census with his children living with him but it might mean a 73 page slog page by page through the Petrolia part of the census.  I have been able to find some information on the children of Margaret and Francois Lamotte but have had trouble seeking them in the census, so be careful and make sure you double-check me,

I am still wondering about Erastus and Ross Albert Lamotte?  It is possible that several of the child died young but I was unable to locate death records. This would make the count of children born 12 if these are two separate children.  At this point obituary notices for some of the children might reveal what happened to them and their father.  A cousin believes Francis died in the US and that might be possible.

More research needs to be done on this whole family and hopefully the above gives more clues, but it is time to move on.
