When I was in Lapeer County last Fall of 2014, I found a great newspaper article that  I thought was very interesting.

Esther Brown article in the local newspaper

Mrs. Esther Brown, the widow lady about 81 years of age, has a comfortable little property left her by her husband, the late George Brown, who died last Fall. Some of her friends thought the estate might be better managed if a guardian was appointed. Accordingly the matter came up in the probate court at Lapeer, last Friday, a large number of our town people being summoned as witnesses. Among those who went out on that day were C.E. Bruce, John E. Howe, Mr. and Mrs. John Henn, Will McIntosh, Jos. Lewis, Dr. Weed, Jas. Cooper and wife, Thos. Clement and wife, Jas. Riley and wife, Mrs. S.S. Bates, Jos. Kohler, Robt. Turnbull, Harvey Down and Sp. P. Gates. It was evident to Judge Hough, however, that Mrs. Brown was neither incompetent nor a spendthrift and therefore even though guardian might be to her advantage, he had no legal authority to make the appointment.

However, circumstances changed and on September 4, 1893 she was declared incompetent by the court due to extreme age and guardians were appointed,: Wm and Isabella McIntosh.

On Sept. 24, 1893 (Liber 20 pg. 344. Sept. 2, 1893) Isabella McIntosh asked that Wm McIntosh be appointed Esther’s guardian.

Esther died a year later on 13 August, 1895.
